Shanghai released today to a dull response at the box-office, but due to the low cost-of-production and money recovered through various rights, the film is already profitable venture before release.
The film cost Rs 20.5 to make. Below is the breakdown
Cost of production – 12.5 crores
Print and marketing – 8 crores
Recovery before release is Rs 15.75 crores from various rights (see below)
Satellite rights – 9 crores
Music rights – 2.75 crores
20% theatrical rights – 4 crores
So, like Dibaker Banerjee said in his interview earlier today, Shanghai has to only recover Rs 4.75 crores from theatrical business in India (80% as 20% has already been sold), overseas business and DVD/Video rights.
