Jean Grey Gets The Wolverine's Most Beautiful Poster Yet

Even though it's been overshadowed by the summer's bigger superhero movies Man of Steel and Iron Man 3, The Wolverine has managed to stand out in a crowded season by focusing on very specific, very beautiful art. Taking inspiration from its Japanese setting, the posters and ads for The Wolverine have mimicked traditional style but made them feel completely fresh in the superhero movie context. And now it's not just Wolvy who gets to look all artsy-- this above poster featuring Famke Jannsen's Jean Grey character debuted today at Collider, and it might be the most beautiful one we've seen yet. If you haven't been paying attention to the Wolverine marketing so far, you might be a little surprised to see Jean Grey returning, given that she died at the end of X-Men: The Last Stand. In fact, her return appearance in The Wolverine was such a surprise that we treated it as a spoiler when she popped up in a sneak peek at the trailer, and once the word was officially out there Hugh Jackman stepped up to explain just how important her presence would be in the new film. That said… she is definitely still dead, and her appearances will either be in flashback or as ghostly apparitions (or, who knows, maybe both). I'm sure this isn't the first time a dead character has gotten their own character poster for a major summer release, but it can't have happened too often, especially for a character whom the entire audience already knew was dead anyway. But aside from Hugh Jackman in the title role, there aren't a lot of stars or familiar character in The Wolverine whom Fox can easily promote to audiences. Hardcore comic book fans may be familiar with Viper (played by Svetlana Khodchenkova), and fans of Japanese films may recognize a quartet of Japanese actors cast in the film. But for people who just want to know what Wolverine's up to when he's not swearing at Professor X? The promise of Jean Grey is pretty much the only hope they've got-- even if she's barely addressed in the actual synopsis for the film. Here's that, for reference:
